TILII Tells All: Our Big Day at the Report Launch!

Nov 8, 2024

TILII with Minister talking about Learning Disability Nurses

We had an amazing time speaking at the release of the Equity of Access and Outcome Report! It was a day filled with stories and inspiring presentations. It focused on making healthcare fair and accessible for everyone, especially people with a learning disability like us. We were so pleased to be part of an event all about change and support for our community.

What the Report’s All About

In 2022, the Chief Nursing Officer in Northern Ireland asked NIPEC to create a group focused on improving the learning disabilities nursing workforce. This group’s job was to work on recommendations from a 2019 review by the Department of Health on learning disabilities nursing. They also considered any unfinished actions from a 2014 health action plan. The project was led by a regional team, co-chaired by Linda Kelly, CEO of NIPEC, and Suzanne Pullins, Executive Director of Nursing at the Northern Health and Social Care Trust.

In August 2024, the final report of the project group ‘Equity of Access and Outcome: the future role of RNLDs in supporting people with a learning disability to achieve the best health possible’ was endorsed by CNO and approved by the Health Minister.

The Equity of Access and Outcome Report is all about making healthcare fair for everyone. It explains how people with a learning disability often don’t get the same quality of healthcare, even though they need it just as much as everyone else. Furthermore, the report highlights why this needs to change and shares ideas for making healthcare more inclusive and respectful.

A few key points? Firstly, it’s important for healthcare staff to understand people with a learning disability better. Secondly, the report also talks about making medical information easy to understand so everyone can make good decisions about their health. Essentially, it’s about treating people well and making sure places like hospitals and clinics are welcoming and safe for everyone.

An Amazing Line-up of Presentations

The day kicked off with a speech from Health Minister Mike Nesbitt, who officially opened the event. He spoke passionately about his commitment to making healthcare better and more inclusive—not just for people with a learning disability, but for everyone. His words set a hopeful tone for the day, emphasizing the importance of fair and accessible healthcare.

The day was packed with fantastic speakers who shared their stories and experiences. Hearing these stories reminded us that everyone deserves to be heard and cared for in a way that meets their needs. The day reinforced that we are not alone in our experiences—and that together, we can make a difference.

TILII’s Time to Shine!

Then, it was our turn! TILII members were so proud to share their stories and show why Learning Disability Nurses are essential. These amazing nurses know how to work with people like us, and we couldn’t wait to tell everyone just how important they are!

Bethany’s Story was up first, with Catherine proudly speaking on her behalf. Bethany has complex needs and she shared how Learning Disability Nurses helps her manage anxiety when she is sick. “Learning Disability Nurses talk to me in a way I understand. They know how anxious I get and help me stay calm,” Bethany shared. This support is crucial for Bethany as keeping calm is essential for her health. Having nurses who understand her needs makes all the difference.

Jonathan’s Story came next. Jonathan was having a great time at a formal event when he suddenly had a cardiac arrest. Luckily, a Learning Disability Nurse was there, and she lay by his side, talking to him while CPR was being done. Jonathan’s mum felt comforted knowing the nurse was with him. The nurse helped make sure staff at the hospital understood his needs. This helped Jonathan feel safe and reassured his mum. Now he’s fully recovered, and he was thrilled to share his story—especially about how he was treated to plenty of ice cream during his hospital stay!

Raising the Roof with the Equal Notes Choir!

Finally, after all the inspiring presentations, the Equal Notes Choir hit the stage. And they absolutely raised the roof! Their performance was filled with so much energy and joy, reminding us all why community and inclusion are so important. Their singing put big smiles on everyone’s faces and was the perfect end to a brilliant event.

Wrapping Up an Inspiring Day

The release of the Equity of Access and Outcome Report was a fantastic event. We felt so proud to stand up there and share our stories in the Long Gallery at Stormont. We were able to show that fair healthcare is not just a nice idea—it’s something that makes a real difference in our lives. All in all, the event highlighted how important it is to work together, listen to each other, and make healthcare a place where everyone feels safe and respected.

Thanks to everyone who spoke, listened, and cheered us on. And a huge thank you to the Equal Notes Choir for sending us off with such an incredible performance! We left the event feeling inspired and ready to keep pushing for healthcare that’s fair and equal for all.
