TILII on Human Rights

TILII on Human Rights Day

Today is Human Rights Day 2024. So, what does TILII have to say on human rights? On this day and every day, TILII (Tell It Like It Is) want to ensure people with a learning disability know their rights and have the tools to advocate for themselves. Human Rights are about being treated fairly, having choices, and living with dignity. For TILII, these are not just words—they are a mission.

What Are Human Rights and Why Do They Matter?

Human rights are freedoms and protections everyone is entitled to, no matter their background or abilities. They include:

  • Being treated equally: No one should face discrimination.
  • Living where and with whom you choose: It’s your life, and you should have a say in it.
  • Being heard: Everyone’s voice matters.
  • Having access: Whether it’s a building, a job, or education, the world should be open to all.

Alex, a TILII member, put it best: “Human rights are freedoms we should all have, not something we should have to fight for.”

Big News: Human Rights in Northern Ireland

Human rights are protected globally by laws like the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).

Danny Donnelly MLA, who is involved in the advocacy for disability rights and the incorporation of the UNCRPD into Northern Ireland law, has been vocal about the importance of creating a legal framework to reinforce the rights of individuals with disabilities and address inequalities.

Additionally, he has called for stronger human rights protections in Northern Ireland and highlighted a major problem: Northern Ireland is behind the rest of the UK in ensuring equality and fairness.

So, Danny Donnelly wants to update laws to make sure everyone is included, especially those with a disability. These changes would help tackle discrimination, make places more accessible, and give people more control over their lives.

TILII welcomes this! Better human rights laws in Northern Ireland could:

  • Make sure people choose where and with whom they live. Too often, people with a learning disability are placed in settings they didn’t choose.
  • Ensure workplaces and schools are welcoming for everyone. This means more chances to learn and earn a living.
  • Improve accessibility everywhere. Things like ramps, lifts, and clear signs are small changes that make a big difference.
  • Protect against discrimination. Strong laws make it easier to challenge unfair treatment and demand equality.

One TILII member shared, “If the law says we matter, then people will treat us better. It’s about having choices, not just being included.”

TILII in Action

But TILII doesn’t just talk about human rights—they make sure people understand them. For instance, their training sessions break down complicated ideas into easy steps. They teach about:

  • The right to privacy and respect: Your life is your own.
  • Making choices: About work, where to live, and what to do in your free time.
  • Standing up to unfair treatment: How to challenge discrimination in everyday situations.

Fun Fact: TILII uses creative tools like videos and roleplay to make learning fun and engaging. One activity is acting out scenarios to show how to stand up for your rights. Check us out on TILII TV!

In addition to TILII’s training, ARC NI also offers human rights training – take a look!

Why This Work Matters

Many people with a learning disability have faced situations where their rights weren’t respected. Some were left out of important decisions, while others were treated unfairly simply because they have a learning disability.

Michael said, “Before I joined TILII, I didn’t know I could speak up. Now, I know my rights, and I help others learn theirs too.”

Therefore, Michael is highlighting the importance of TILII’s work. Because it empowers people to take control of their lives and helps them feel confident to demand fairness.

TILII’s Say on Human Rights

TILII’s message is clear, rights aren’t just for some people—they’re for everyone. They are excited about the MLA’s call for better laws and are ready to support these changes.

“Human rights aren’t a privilege—they’re something we all deserve. Let’s work together to make sure no one is left behind.”

What’s Next for TILII?

TILII will continue their training and advocacy work, showing people with a learning disability how to claim their rights and make their voices heard. They’re also working to raise awareness about how stronger laws can improve lives.

Bethany said, “We’re not just helping ourselves—we’re helping everyone understand that human rights matter.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, this isn’t just about laws or politics; it’s about creating a world where everyone is treated fairly and equally. TILII’s work reminds us that change starts with understanding and action.

Therefore, with their passion and the support of politicians, like the Alliance MLA, Northern Ireland can become a place where everyone—no matter their ability—can live with dignity, respect, and freedom.
