Human Rights Day 2025
ARC NI and Team TILII are celebrating Human Rights Day 2025
A rally is planned in L/Derry on Saturday 17th August, from 12-2 pm for post-19 SEN Support.
An important movement is gaining momentum to secure better support for students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in Northern Ireland once they turn 19. Unlike in England, Northern Ireland currently lacks laws to ensure Post-19 SEN Support. Alma White and her son, Caleb, are dedicated to changing this with their #CalebsCauseNI campaign.
Alma’s son, Caleb, is 16 and has a learning disability, autism and ADHD. Alma and other parents are determined to ensure their kids get the right support after they leave school. Right now, many young people with a learning disability, autism and other support needs don’t get the help they need to plan for this transition. Alma and these parents are pushing the government to introduce laws that will benefit all young people with additional needs in Northern Ireland.
Young people with SEN in Northern Ireland face many barriers without these laws. After they turn 19, they often struggle to find appropriate educational programs or job training. ARC NI’s membership does an incredible job providing training and job opportunities for young people leaving school. However, limited funding and a lack of clear pathways prevent more young people getting the choices and support they need. This can leave them feeling isolated and limit their opportunities for work or further education.
Post-19 SEN students across the UK should receive continued support tailored to their needs. This will help them transition smoothly from school to adulthood and ensure they are not left behind.
Following a recent protest at Stormont, another rally is planned in L/Derry. It will be on Saturday 17th August, from 12-2 pm at the Guildhall Square in the city centre. The event will include the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane, Councillor Lilian Seenoi-Barr, and other local politicians.
Visit the Caleb’s Cause NI Facebook page and sign the online petition.
Together, we can make a big difference. Let’s ensure no young adult with a learning disability is left without the support they need as they move into adulthood. Making things fair across the UK will help create a better, more inclusive society for everyone.
