Informing Choices NI and Ulster University launch Project Findings.
On Monday 3rd June, Informing Choices NI and Ulster University launched a project report for ‘The Development of a Menopause Education Programme for Women with a Learning Disability’.
The project was funded by The Ideas Fund and carried out over 18 months. We worked with women from 6 different disability organisations in the Derry City & Strabane District Council area. These organisations were Destined, Tuned-In, New Horizons Partnership, Foyle Down Syndrome Trust, Aspace and Stage Beyond.
We wanted to do this project because every woman with a learning disability will experience menopause but there was very little information and education available. We designed a menopause education programme, with the help of some women and staff from the disability organisations, and then delivered the project to the 6 groups to find out if it improved their knowledge on menopause.
Each group took part in a 6 week programme. They learned how to recognise the signs and symptoms of menopause, what can help with these signs and symptoms and who can help to support them through menopause.
The feedback from each group was great. Everyone learned a lot and we had the best time delivering the sessions.
More can be found about the project in this report.
