The Launch in Newry!

ARC NI Welcomes Launch of ‘Together Works’ in Newry

ARC Northern Ireland is pleased to welcome the launch of Together Works. This new project will support adults with moderate learning difficulties (MLD) into meaningful, therapeutic employment.

Launched in Newry to mark Learning Disability Week, Together Works brings together local partners including Clanrye Group, Newry Gateway Club, Southern Regional College, and Newry Chamber of Commerce. The pilot scheme will offer up to 30 participants the chance to learn practical skills and carry out ‘fulfilment-based services.’ For example, packing, sorting, and stock-taking for local businesses. This model not only supports individuals but also promotes inclusion and benefits the wider community and economy.

This is an exciting step towards a more inclusive and supportive community. It gives people with a MLD the opportunity to gain confidence, feel valued, and become more independent. This all creates a meaningful life.

The Gaps

At ARC NI, we see this as a timely and encouraging response to gaps that have long existed in post-19 support for people with a learning disability. This is something that has been highlighted through ongoing policy and research work. This includes the Comparative Analysis of Legislative Frameworks for Post-19 Education and Skills. As well as the recent Review of Post-School Education and Training Provision.

The comparative analysis shows that in NI, there is no dedicated legal framework to support young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) after they leave school. This is not the case in England and Wales. As a result, many face a sudden drop-off—or “cliff edge”—in support at age 19. In addition there are very limited routes into education, employment, or independent living.

Together Works demonstrates what a practical, person-centred model of support could look like in N.I. Moreover, it aligns well with the aims of the Programme of Reform for Learners with a Disability. As a result serving as a working example of how inclusive employment, development, and community integration can be delivered with the right partnerships in place.

More opportunities

Additionally, we’re also pleased to highlight another exciting opportunity on the horizon—an All-Island Online Entrepreneurship Course for people with disabilities. Starting 17th September 2025, it is open to anyone across North and South. Importantly, it is completely free for all successful applicants. Significantly, this programme offers yet another inclusive pathway for individuals who wish to build independence through self-employment. Applications close on 31st July 2025.

Final Thoughts

We welcome the strong commitment shown by the project partners and Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald, who officially launched the scheme. Her support sends a clear message about the importance of improving access to work for people with a learning disability.

ARC NI sees this scheme as an important model that could inform future policy and help shape a new, rights-based approach to lifelong learning and employment for people with a learning disability. Lastly, we look forward to seeing the positive difference Together Works will make. And we hope to see more initiatives like this rolled out across Northern Ireland.

Together, inclusion works.
